And hey, this is just life. Ask any, non-using adult. Our experience is not unique. It's called Life on Earth. We read from the Big Book and the thoughts that were shared felts honest and directed towards doing the work it takes to fix oneself.
I accompanied my daughter to a different meeting while she was visiting and experienced an ill feeling as I sat through speaker after speaker talking about themselves and enjoying their moment in the spotlight. I was heartsick as speakers unashamedly bashed the LDS church in which I happen to belong and love dearly.
Thank you for helping me understand more clearly that finding the right meeting is essential in order to make the most of the time spent. edjookatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03264790939082261580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530451786669304321.post-38062507316701657872016-04-13T19:46:55.316-04:002016-04-13T19:46:55.316-04:00Hi Charlie, I was sitting at the parent support gr...Hi Charlie, I was sitting at the parent support group run by recovered addicts to help families understand what we are dealing with. We had a speaker, a young man, he got sober 2 years ago with the help of his sponsor and working 12 steps, no detox, no treatment, no sober house. He abused alcohol and drugs. He tried to get sober before and was baffled that he couldn't, then one day he was ready. I asked him how did you get through the first months of recovery? He pushed through RID, he had the strength to say NO to his dealer offering free pills. GOD helps those who want to be helped.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530451786669304321.post-68070610531330957742016-02-02T16:25:58.375-05:002016-02-02T16:25:58.375-05:00Wow, very cool Charlie. "Don't use no matter what" "think the drink through" and "meeting makers make it!", all lies to a newcomer. First if I could "not use no matter what" I would bang heroin on Saturdays and take care of my family the rest of the week. "Thinking a drink through" implies self reliance, isn't this why we got here in the first place? Relying on our own "self will run nightmare"? And any AA history buff will tell you "meeting makers" DONT make it, in 1935 there was one meeting a week, I guarantee you Bill and Bob did not tell the original 9 and 7 to "don't drink no matter what" and just get to a meeting. I was fortunate enough to survive my drug use and finally link up with real message spreaders. Insanity is sitting in a 12 step program that urges a profound spiritual and emotional change through the 12 steps and NOT working the steps! I achieved a thorough understanding and working of the first 8 steps in 5 days, anyone who really is about this knows 9 takes time and 10/11/12 is for life. I stick to literature meetings these days and due to the unfortunate condition of NA I consider my single NA meeting my "service commitment" now. After having had my spiritual awakening through working the steps I have never felt more alone in the fellowship.Dave Johnsonnoreply@blogger.com
